Workshop Skinner Releasing TechniqueTM and Improvisation with Bettina Neuhaus

SRT is an integrative and experiential approach to movement and dance developed by American dance artist Joan Skinner (1924-2021). It is recognized as a significant way to stimulate and enhance both: dance technique and creative growth.

SRT supports the process of letting go of unnecessary tension, releasing new possibilities in how we perceive and how we dance. The classes provide specific tools to access effortlessness and multi-directional alignment, depth, presence and freedom in movement and stillness.

Poetic imagery and hands-on partner studies facilitate deep and more subtle kinaesthetic experience of movement.

Noticing, as a first step for change, and allowing movement to happen, are some of the key ideas in the practice.

Each day starts with a SRT class that opens our senses and imagination and allows us to expand the availability and variety of our dancing.

Combining the releasing principles of the morning class with awareness of time, space and other compositional

aspects forms the guideline for improvisational work in the afternoon.

As we keep navigating between inner and outer awareness, we follow the constant flow of action, inspiration and imagination. This will lead into solos, duets and group improvisations in which we simultaneously 'read' and create

the composition that emerges in the moment.

Bettina Neuhaus (Amsterdam) is an Independent Dance Artist and mentor, who studied at the Academy of Theatre and Dance, Amsterdam and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London. She trained with Joan Skinner in Seattle and is a certified Skinner Releasing TechniqueTM (SRT) teacher at Introductory and Ongoing levels.

For over 30 years, Instant Composition in performance and the collaboration with dancers, musicians, visual artists and light designers have been at the heart of her work. With a growing interest in human ecology, she has been developing a movement practice in natural environments since 2010, which she shares in projects and special workshops. Bettina teaches Instant Composition and SRT at independent studios, art academies and universities in Europe and South America.
