Bettina Helmrich (DE)

Tänzerin, Performerin

(DE)

Bettina Helmrich studied contemporary dance, performance and video at the European Dance Development Center (EDDC) of the Arnhem Academy of Arts/Netherlands.

She has been working as a dancer/performer and dancemaker for more than 20 years. She has shown her own dance pieces at various festivals in Europe and in the framework programme of documenta Kassel. The pieces are often a connection between dance and video, through which a constantly changing perception of time and space is created. The resulting images in their fleetingness allow for irritations and border crossings. In addition, she has had various guest engagements at the Staatstheater Kassel.

She sees her work as an interface between the performing and visual arts, between narrative and abstract movement language. Her artistic-philosophical work is not concerned with the representation of something but with its embodiment. For her, the body as the concrete in dance is the means to enter into connection with space, time and other bodies. The actual is the ground
of the dance/movement. For me, the adequate form of dance is improvisation or instantaneous composition.
