Tanzhaus temporär Nº11

Architecture of time - the eternal relationship

05.- 08.09.2024

Curated by Deborah Smith-Wicke

Tanzhaus temporär N° 11 by tanz*werk kassel deals with the architecture of time. We experience space and time in dance, in movement. As we move through space, time passes, distance passes, the body ages. Time is not measured time. Time IS. Space: is a container for matter, is architectural space, is social space for interaction, is geographical space, is virtual space, is expansion.

The passing of time becomes visible in change. The life of bodies and things is not "durable", it is in constant flux. We do not achieve inner freedom by holding on to material things, but by becoming aware of time. Being in time, in the moment. Are we confronting finiteness or infinity?

The performances of Tanzhaus temporär N° 11 deal with the relationship between space and time on a spiritual, psychological, mathematical and musical level.

The opening of the 11th Tanzhaus on September 5 will be a double evening with two solo works: Re-trace of a trace, leaving a trace, in a trace by IlanaReynolds and Gravity - the speed of existence by Abdennacer Leblalta.

On Friday, September 6, choreographer Max Levy will present his dance short film A Song Without Words. This will be followed by the trio Clepsydra, choreographed by Max Levy.

On Saturday, you can physically experience Levy's work in a two-hour workshop.

The weekend will conclude with a duet with clarinettist Andrea Nagy and dancer and choreographer Michael Langeneckert with the piece Time and Motion.

tanz*werk kassel has been organizing the Tanzhaus temporär series since 2022. During this time, exciting dance pieces and performances have been shown in Kassel, showcasing the broad spectrum of contemporary dance. The great interest shown by the audience has supported and strengthened our project. Also for the Tanzhaus temporär
N°11, tanz*werk kassel is looking forward to a refreshing exchange on the subject of the architecture of time.

Program

Re-trace of a trace, leaving a trace, in a trace

Traces: photographs of a time gone by / coffee stains on a page of a book / footprints in the mud / sawdust

This solo is the second in a series of solos that I have reactivated from the dance archive of French choreographer Christine Brunel. By sifting through the photographs, articles and choreographic notes of Brunel's solo Umriss (1997), I approach these archived traces as time capsules, as silent moments of condensed time, which are reactivated and expanded by a body and projected into the space in the form of a new solo: Re-trace of a trace, leaving a trace in a trace.

Original choreography: Christine Brunel
Concept/dance/reconstruction: Ilana Reynolds
Photography: Wilfried Krüger
Music: David Darling

GRAVITY – die Geschwindigkeit des Daseins

The earth rotates once every 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.09053 seconds. Measurements of time. This speed generates a force that is sufficient to throw everything off the earth. How is it that we, standing still, do not feel the movement of the spinning earth? How do we exist with this movement? Does it affect our inner state as humans? Gravity is an elastic force for all particles of the body and is reflected in the "personality of bodies" and their will to live. Just as earth and water hold on to the globe, every child "falls into its life" (Algerian language), it is gravity that makes us exist.

Concept/choreography/performance: Abdennacer Leblalta
Music/Sound/Composition: Abdennacer Leblalta

A Song Without Words (Kurzfilm)

A Song Without Words follows two friends estranged in isolation and confrontation, afraid to engage with each other's existence. An extension of escapism and acceptance of individual and collective realities, questioning the how and why of avoiding the inevitable.

An ebb and flow of emotion and attraction, A Song Without Words speaks about avoidance, risk and intimacy in a time of uncertain standing and inescapable encounters.

Concept and direction: Max Levy
Choreography: Max Levy in collaboration with Miguel  Toro
Performance: Max Levy, Miguel Toro
Camera: Jubal Battisti
Additional camera: Yaiza Davilla Gomez

Clepsydra

Clepsydra is an act of shared hypnosis in which three dancers and the audience merge in a meditative study of simple perceptions. Named after an ancient water clock, the piece explores the concept of time dilation/time dilation: each being perceives time differently depending on its mass and speed.

Clepsydra invites us to reflect on a single moment of sacred bonds and temporary forms that constantly rearrange themselves to overcome wonder, loss and solidarity.

Choreography: Max Levy
Performance: Francesca Ciaffoni, Yuri Fortini, Max Levy
Original composition: Max Levy
Lighting design: Max Levy

MAX LEVY
Compositon workshop on time dilation

In this workshop, Max Levy will give a two-hour insight into the processes behind his meditative work Clepsydra. The workshop will explore the tools of looping and development that are the building blocks of Levy's work. It is about exploring how small decisions can lead to bigger and bigger changes. Using observation, specificity and imagination, by the end of the course you will create your own patterns and constellations from the basic common tools.

The workshop is aimed at professionals and students pursuing professional dance training.

Time and Motion

Time and Motion deals with the simple encounter between music and dance, dance and music in its most original form. A musician and a dancer search for possibilities of artistic communication. Two art forms enter into an unbiased interplay that goes through ups and downs, as in a human relationship.
ups and downs.

The evening will be enhanced by a solo piece for bass clarinet by Andrea Nagy and a solo dance piece by Michael Langeneckert.
