Detailed Information

Who is eligible to apply for this artistic residency program?

This Open Call is for artists who work in dance / movement / embodiment orientated projects. Artists from all career stages: early-, mid-, long-career are eligible to apply.

Priority will be given to proposals:

  • From regional artists who are based in Kassel and North Hessen

  • Artists that don't have access to an own studio or space

  • Projects that have not (yet) received any funding (e. g. Stadt Kassel, HMWK, Next Steps, or others)

  • LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, refugees, and immigrants' communities are strongly encouraged and welcome to apply in this residency program - the organizational and curatorial team on behalf of Tanzwerk*Kassel e.V. acknowledges an oppressive system and greater challenges that these communities go through, and also has an antidiscrimination policy.

What do we offer within this artistic residency program?

At the end of each round there will be the possibility to showcase the projects in any format that is appropriate, such as open rehearsals, showings, performance lecture, installation, among others. Artists and/or collectives are welcome to choose the format and inform the organisation team about their needs, according to the technical scoop offered from each venue - SOZO vim and Kulturhaus Dock 4.

  • Each selected artist/collective in residency will be given a grant allowance of 200 € (euros) to use for their project as “Sachkosten" / materials.

  • Artists/collectives who are not based in Kassel, are welcome to apply, and by proof they will receive extra support for transport and accommodation. However, it is not guaranteed to cover all expenses in full.

  • Furthermore the artists will receive five (5) hours of mentoring paid by Tanzwerk*Kassel to support their project.

  • After each residency period, artists will receive the full documentation (photos and video) and a written confirmation of participation in the artistic residencies program from Tanzwerk*Kassel e.V. - Part of the project “Tanzwerk MOVES (moving in - moving on - moving beyond) - ein Raum für Bewegung” selected by Next Steps (2026).

Important to know:
  • Only one application can be submitted under the same name/email.

  • Be aware of the criteria.

  • It is required availability to commit to the schedule offered during the residency period.

Creating, maintaining, designing, and sharing spaces with and for each other is something special and necessary for a vibrant dance scene. Associations such as Tanzwerk*Kassel demonstrate what professional actors in dance and choreography can achieve together through continuous networked activity: moving into their own space. This space is equipped to become a place for the growing and increasingly intergenerational dance scene with residencies, professional training, and other, sometimes public, programs.

Such a self-organized infrastructure, together with local actors and partners, pursues clear ideas, treats artistic, organizational, and administrative processes as interconnected, and takes them seriously. In this way, it can be a space for many and sustainably strengthen the working methods and reach of the scene.
